Night Sculpture

Posted by Bill Jennings ((Bay Area Northern Calif), United States) on 29 June 2009 in Art & Design and Portfolio.

Punta Ballena, near Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. So appropriate an entrance for "Whale Point" in the Sea of Cortez.

This image was captured at night using a long exposure to get a milky look in the water. What drew me to the image is the color tones in the whale's tale: the greens, blues, and warm browns.

Just made it home after a month of travel - posted a few photos from my journey to within 48 miles of the antartica circle: at nearly the longest day of the year: hence, there was 21 hours a day of sunlight...

Thank you for your patience while I was out of touch.

I do hope you followed Bob Kelly's blog (my roommate) while he is still traveling - he is now on Easter Island - and will be updating his blog for some time to come - please check it out!

This is a drop-dead gorgeous shot. Looks very abstract. Great water effect.

zOOm from Paris, France

@zOOm: that's a great comment - it's a real credit to the sculptor !

MJ from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

wow...i thought it was real whales when i 1st saw the pic. awesome shot!

29 Jun 2009 1:38pm

@MJ: great feedback. it does have a very realistic look at a glance. I really enjoyed the sculpture, and returned at night : as it allowed me to ignore all the background more effectively, and play up the look of the water.

Dawn from Maryland, United States

This is an awesome shot. Perfect exposure. : )

29 Jun 2009 9:26pm

@Dawn: Thank you Dawn. Shot this manually, and really bracketed the exposure to find what I thought balanced the light and the effect of the water.

Lambspun from Madison, Maine, United States

Surreal....it is so beautiful!

30 Jun 2009 12:59am

@Lambspun: Thanks Lambspun - glad you liked it.

Jason Kravitz from Brussels, Belgium

wow - great idea for a sculpture - looks authentic especially at night

30 Jun 2009 7:30am

@Jason Kravitz: thanks Jason - the night made it work, during the day - there are many distractions in the background, that even a soft bokeh wouldn't fix.
