Zebras

Posted by Bill Jennings ((Bay Area Northern Calif), United States) on 20 June 2009 in Animal & Insect and Portfolio.

From Kenya

Just made it home after a month of travel - posted a few photos from my journey to within 48 miles of the antartica circle: at nearly the longest day of the year: hence, there was 21 hours a day of sunlight...

Thank you for your patience while I was out of touch.

I do hope you followed Bob Kelly's blog (my roommate) while he is still traveling - he is now on Easter Island - and will be updating his blog for some time to come - please check it out!

Dulcie from Danville, United States

Wonderful graphic photo...my favorite, black and white. And, goodness, would you look at the way those Zebra stripes zig and zag together!!! Marvelous!

20 Jun 2009 5:34am

@Dulcie: thanks Dulcie - Zebras just seem to POP in Black and White. I love how it intensifies their patterns.

Matt from Gainesville, United States

Wow! Great composition and use of you subject!

20 Jun 2009 5:44am

@Matt: Thank you Matt - I must admit, I did some cropping to get to this image. The original full-frame composition didn't seem as strong to me.

Lambspun from Madison, Maine, United States

How cool to get a photo with all these zebras together....nice shot....showing off their stripes like they're doing ;)

20 Jun 2009 3:15pm

@Lambspun: they were grouped together in the limited shade on the planes of Kenya : so it was quite common to see them together - I liked this image with the way they stuck together, and the variations in the grays/blacks in the stripes.

Michael from Spokane, United States

amazing capture! love how the black and white looks so good with zebras. brilliante!

20 Jun 2009 6:42pm

@Michael: Thank you Michael - I do think Zebras really work well in Black and White.

Sugata from Newark, United States

I always love to see this lens of yours at work!

20 Jun 2009 10:58pm

@Sugata: it's definitely one of my favorite lenses. At times, I wonder why I ever carry zooms: as the prime lenses are so much sharper.

B. Thomas from Arlington, Texas, United States

Very cool!!!

20 Jun 2009 11:24pm

@B. Thomas: thank you Barbara

Barbara from Florida, United States

You cropped the frame perfectly working the image to it's fullest potential. I like the composition of the two heads, one taller than the other and the black snout in front.
This gave me a chance to study their stripes to see the variations particularly on the forehead. Very interesting.
This certainly is of professional quality, Bill.
Wishes for a wonderful Father's Day tomorrow.

21 Jun 2009 3:47am

@Barbara: thanks for the notes on the composition. I was going for the vertical to really highlight this grouping. Glad it worked for you. Thanks for thinking of me for father's day: should be a madhouse around here with the three little ones...
