Springtime is Dinner TimePosted by Bill Jennings ((Bay Area Northern Calif), United States) on 11 June 2009 in Animal & Insect and Portfolio. Just made it home after a month of travel - posted a few photos from my journey to within 48 miles of the antartica circle: at nearly the longest day of the year: hence, there was 21 hours a day of sunlight... Thank you for your patience while I was out of touch. I do hope you followed Bob Kelly's blog (my roommate) while he is still traveling - he is now on Easter Island - and will be updating his blog for some time to come - please check it out!

@Loner: Thank you Loner - i hope the details don't take away from a clear subject: that's always a balance for composition, isn't it? jamesy from christchurch, New Zealandawesome 5 stars from me so crisp and clear love it 11 Jun 2009 6:31am @jamesy: Thank you Jamesy. This time, the full sun really helped get the DOF needed for this crispness. Sarito from Basingstoke, United KingdomWow.. this is Excellent Macro! very clear and sharp!! 11 Jun 2009 7:37am @Sarito: Thank you Sarito. The light was with me on this day. @zOOm: Thank you zOOm. Love the flowers, it adds color to the image. @Sarah: Thanks Sarah. apple8 from Dublin, IrelandCan't say I'm a fan of the fly in general - but close up they're quite magnificent. Love the composition and colours - great sharp detail too. 11 Jun 2009 10:24am @apple8: I'm not a real fan of the fly either, but on these flowers, and with the wing detail: it does have some appeal here. Glad you like the image, even if the subject is not the most naturally appealing subject. Marie-Hélène Ammor from Casablanca/Paris, MoroccoWonderful colors and composition ! Time of food'abundance ! A very beautiful photo ! 11 Jun 2009 10:24am @Marie-Hélène Ammor: Thank you Marie-Helene : yes, spring is a time of abundance! Ron from Saint Louis, United StatesOutstanding clarity, here, Bill ... shot with the Canon 180mm f/3.5L? I'm transfixed by the beauty of its transparent wings. You've isolated your subject very well while providing (at f/11) enough detail in the meal to show off its beauty. Nice work ... ron 11 Jun 2009 11:49am @Ron: Yes, shot with the 180mm f/3.5L - it's a great lens, as the operating distance is far enough from the flower, that you can actually take some shots without disturbing the fly too much. always a balance on f/stop, shutter speed, and ISO isn't it! Roman from Thunder Bay, CanadaHa... even and ordinary house fly can be interesting when photographed up close. Great shot Bill !! cheers 11 Jun 2009 11:52am @Roman: Thanks Roman - yes, even an ugly fly can be appealing when you see the details in a macro shot. @Judy: Thanks Judy - I enjoyed taking this one. Jason Kravitz from Brussels, Belgiumthat is some serious detail there Bill - a little scary too 11 Jun 2009 12:29pm @Jason Kravitz: It's ashame the fly isn't more photogenic: but it does have some appeal close up! @kisskool: Thanks for such kind words on this macro @Onlymehdi: Thanks, Thanks !! B. Thomas from Arlington, Texas, United StatesThe flowers are beautiful. The fly is interesting but a little creepy too. ;-) 11 Jun 2009 1:52pm @B. Thomas: Thank you Barbara - I know the fly is not the most appealing subject, but the detail is pretty amazing, especially against such beautiful flowers.
