de Glace'Posted by Bill Jennings ((Bay Area Northern Calif), United States) on 11 May 2009 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio. Ice crystals on a fall morning in the heights of the Rocky Mountains over a rivulet at the side of the road. I liked Abhav's Carrots yesterday for it's simplicity, framing, and lighting. I liked Dulcie's creativity shown in the photo Did you hear something.....? As she took one image and transformed it to what was in her minds eye, based on form and shape. Well done. Michael's La Bouche 2 is a fantastic waterscape - crepuscular light gives a rich color to the sea. Just made it home after a month of travel - posted a few photos from my journey to within 48 miles of the antartica circle: at nearly the longest day of the year: hence, there was 21 hours a day of sunlight... Thank you for your patience while I was out of touch. I do hope you followed Bob Kelly's blog (my roommate) while he is still traveling - he is now on Easter Island - and will be updating his blog for some time to come - please check it out!

@jamesy: Thanks jamesy - I thought it was worth sharing! P J W Miller from Chase Terrace, United KingdomNicely described Bill and a great shot to go with it, nice formations 11 May 2009 7:48am @P J W Miller: They are so small, just under the foot - the total span of the ice here was less than a foot. I thought it was different, and needed a photo. Mandy Provan from Johannesburg, South AfricaOh wow Bill - this is fantastic - it must've been really cold up there to get such awesome ice! :) 11 May 2009 7:52am @Mandy Provan: Ironically, wasn't very cold - it was just below freezing at night, and had warmed up to about 40F when I saw this. I believe it froze slowly, allowing the crystals to form? Not sure, but it was so unique - I wanted to take this photo. Linerberry from Sumner, Christchurch, New ZealandThis is soooo cool!!!! What a great shot Bill!!! Bravo:-) 11 May 2009 7:54am @Linerberry: Many thanks Linerberry. I enjoyed this day taking photographs - this was one of the first on a great autumn day in the mountains. xavier cardell from menorca-barcelona, SpainTerrific compostion! Great colours with the just amount of saturation. Brilliant to me 11 May 2009 8:15am @xavier cardell: Hardest for me on this was getting the white balance right - as the blue in the ice, and the brown in the rocks really took me some time to make it look right. Glad the saturation looks right to you. Bill Roman from Thunder Bay, Canadavery cool shot Bill, I guess in more ways than one. cheers 11 May 2009 11:25am @Roman: Great pun, Roman - I love that! I am glad you liked the photo. Bill @Onlymehdi: Thank you for your kind words Barbara from Florida, United StatesNature's art! You framed the shot perfectly capturing the patterns of the ice and texture of the stones below the surface. Superb clarity. You capture clarity of water and ice so well. I like the many directions and pattern of the ice. 11 May 2009 1:48pm @Barbara: In some ways, this many shapes and forms can be a distraction until it becomes the subject. I thought it worked out, glad you liked it as well. I had trouble with the white balance on this one - hope the ice didn't seem too blue! @DaveB: Thank you Dave. Mariana from waterloo, CanadaVEry interesting photo of two different textures . LIke the contrast of them . VEry, very cool ! 11 May 2009 2:05pm @Mariana: Indeed, it was very cool (just above freezing when I got this photo) - but worth every minute in the great outdoors. Glad you like the play on contrasts. Susan from Fort Lauderdale, FL, United StatesGreat textures you caught in this shot...Excellent showing of the intracacies of ice formation!! And just enough of the rocks below to give it some definition......Nice shot indeed!! 11 May 2009 2:42pm @Susan: Thank you Susan. I thought the warm colors against the ice, and the ability to create a diagonal made it an unusual shot. dj.tigersprout from New York City, United Statesooh! this is just superb!! marvelous patterns and textures! excellent contrast!! wonderfully ornamental, great eye!! 11 May 2009 2:47pm @dj.tigersprout: Thank you DJ. I liked the warm/cool and the rocks/ice contrasts in the photo. Amazingly enough it was just at my feet as I stepped out of the car on a mountain pass road near the peak. Ajay from Pune, IndiaBeautiful shot, Bill. Love the way those star like shapes are coming out of that melting ice. Superb quality. 11 May 2009 3:53pm @Ajay: Thank you Ajay. I thought the ice was especially nice for this photo - I haven't seen this pattern before or since. john4jack from Corvallis, Oregon, United StatesTerrific capture and composition. 11 May 2009 5:40pm @john4jack: Thank you a bunch - coming from a naturalist, that means a lot to me.
